What Do Busted Knees, Social Media and Gary Vaynerchuk All Have In Common?

My day yesterday.

Yep, you heard right. Let me start you all off at 8:45am on 1/6/10.

So I was all dressed and heading out the door. Laptop…..CHECK, camera…..CHECK, notebook…..CHECK. All ready to my first meeting of the day. My first meeting where I was under the impression that I was going to see where I could fit in with helping out in the Social Media aspect of business. That was in fact the impression I got when I spoke with the person on the phone the week before.

So I drive into Tampa, park and walk a few blocks IN THE COLD to meet up with these two individuals. Long story short…I wasted a lot of time putting together a strategy to propose to them and instead was proposed to. I wont get into exactly who or what, but I felt deceived and that feeling isn’t good. My time could have been spent working, blogging, Twittering or simply just not there.
So I left there and while in the parking lot just fell… No reason for it. I know how to walk, my shoes aren’t too high. It just happened.

Rockin’ It In 2010

For 2010 one of my New Years resolutions is to seek out AWESOME individuals rocking it in Social Media. I am not talking Ashton Kutcher-like rocking, I am talking about those individuals (maybe even you) that are positively using Social Media for business or personal reasons.

Who am I to judge this anyways, right? Well I didn’t write a book on “How To…..Social Media”, but I have been rockin’ it for 3 years and I know I can spot a good seed when one crosses my path.

So once a week starting January1st I am going to choose someone who in my eyes is using Social Media to brand whatever it is in a positive, social and un-spammy kind of way. I will write a blog post on them (after they have been notified and consent) and link to them all over the blog post for that week. The blog will be archived for years to come (unless the Internet Monsters eat my content).

You may not ever see these individuals featured on CNN for what they do, but this is my way of saying “I see you and YOU ROCK!”
I am pumped for 2010, are you?

Saying Goodbye To 2009

2009 has been a year full of ups and downs.

For myself, I have gone from working for someone else, to now working for myself.

I have also made many amazing new friendships both irl and Online.

2009 has been a very rough year for many. Unemployment rates have skyrocketed, stock market has become unstable, stable, unstable and well we could keep going with that one. We have seen major floods, hurricanes and blizzards.

Our first African-American President took office.

Twitter and Facebook became the “it” Social Networks leaving MySpace, Friendster and many others in its dust.
Social Media became the "cool buzz phrase"

Businesses started embracing the digital world of Online Marketing

We lost many famous faces: Michael Jackson, Adam Goldstein, Bea Arthur, Brittany Murphy, Dom DeLuise, Farrah Fawcett and many more (see a more complete list HERE)

2009 has been the year for many startup companies, for YouTubers to make some real cash and unfortunately for spammers and scammers to come out in full force.

Three Ways To A Better Web Rank

Are you wondering what you can do to rank better through Google?
If you answered YES to both questions then I think that you might want to read on...
I am going to give three very simple things that you can do to help your website rank.

1. Meta Keywords: Everyone needs them BUT you do not need to weigh heavily on them. 10 keywords max, any more and you could be harming your rank rather then improving it.

2. Meta Description:Your Meta Description should be no more than 150 characters. Let's try to not overdue it.

3. Page Title: We already know what the name of your business is so you do not need to have that as your page title, instead try to describe what the business is in a very short sentence.

How To Twitter When You Are Brand Spankin New

I know, I know! How to Twitter blog posts are everywhere. They really are and they are informative to many people that have been Twittering for a while already. They however are not so helpful to the brand spankin' new Tweople which is why I chose to write this post.

Twitter is an awesome social tool that is all too often misused and unfortunately many people do not realize that they are misusing it. I feel guilty at times not adding people that are following 1,000 people and only have 28 followers. I am always asking myself "Are they new or are they just a spammer?". Think of using Twitter as being the new person in town. You don't go around passing out the same piece of paper to all of your new neighbors expecting them to read it and love you and you just keep walking to the next house without interaction, or maybe you do. If you do then PLEASE STOP READING THIS POST! It isn't for you.

So step by step I am going to provide you with the steps that will allow you to have a positive presence on Twitter and form contacts and relationships that matter because lets face it, numbers don't matter at all.

STEP ONE

Choose a GOOD username. Maybe it's your real name, maybe it's a name that defines you. No matter what the name is just remember that people will remember you by it.

STEP TWO

After you have signed up personalize your Twitter page. Provide a bio because we want to know who you are. Add a picture of YOU and not your logo or an image you found on the Internet. BE REAL

STEP THREE

DO not go and follow thousands of people. Instead go to the search option and look for people in your geographical location or people that have the same interests as you.

STEP FOUR

Interact immediately. Watch your Twitter stream and respond to the people that you follow. They are more likely to follow you back if you interact with an @reply

STEP FIVE

Provide us with quality content. I don't care about bleaching my teeth or how I can get hundreds of new followers in a day, but I would love to read your blog.

STEP SIX

Be consistent. Don't walk away for a month and come back expecting thousands of new followers. You may have new followers, but I can bet that they will not be the ones that will provide you with anything more than a spam message every five minutes.

STEP SEVEN

Be yourself! If you love to be funny then gosh darnit, be funny! Being real is what the Social Web is all about. There are many games that you can play if you want to portray a fabricated image.

STEP EIGHT

Organize your Twitter life. Tweetdeck, Twihrl, Seesmic and applications like these are so helpful. You no longer have to worry about refreshing your page on the web as these will let you know when there are new updates.

STEP NINE

Enjoy it! If you don't enjoy Twitter then why are you using it?
'nuff said!

This past Friday @EdieGalley and I made the trek from the Tampa area to Orlando for IZeaFest. What is IZeaFest? Only the most awesome social experience ever! Shaking hands with Chris Brogan, listening to Julia Roy, meeting Jackie Silver (and so many more); it was a week in Social interaction heaven OFF of the Internet (well mostly).
It was held at Sea World this year and was filled with insightful content, warm and welcoming people, beautiful scenery and activities to keep everyone on their feet.

Everyone took away different things that will help them achieve their own personal goals. What did I take away from IZeaFest? Well I took with me some amazing new friendships, more insight on how important video on the internet is and the reassurance that this is indeed the path I need to be going down (oh and all of that other stuff that I took notes on LOL)

Will I be heading back next year?
YOU BET!!!

Ups and Downs In A Day

My Friday started off with a few conference calls, Twitter, and checking my email as usual about 9:00am. Around 11:00am I realized I still needed to figure out what I was going to wear to my meetings for the day because I was for a change leaving the desk and computer to go and shake REAL hands.
I begin my journey to my meetings about 12:45pm and all of a sudden the car begins to shake just a little. I assumed it was only the road I was on, but as soon as I get onto 4 the entire car begins to vibrate. I feel like I am in a blender and begin flipping out. Normally if there is an odd sound I would just turn up the radio and ignore the noise, but there was nothing that I could do to ignore this.
I finally get to my first destination, The Dream Factory and get to sit down with Chris Krimitsos and Katie Krienitz. I was there with David Doerges and Celeste Underwood from Free Networking International as I have been for the past 4 weeks working on their Social Media and promoting their events. Anyways we had an AMAZING time learning about TWBA and talked all sorts of technical, Internet related things. My eyes were sparkly and I was indeed for an hour in heaven talking with like-minded individuals. In the back on my mind however I knew that I still had a situation with the car that I needed to tend to eventually. I was able to forget about it briefly as we began talking about Facebook, blogging and all sorts of other amazing things.
Once we finished that meeting we had to make out way to the Westshore Hotel only about a block over and meet with some other truy amazing individuals. Once again I got into the car praying that it would take me where I needed to go without killing me in the process.
Once at our second destination I realized that the front passenger tire was about 9 months prego and ready to burst. Actually it had a gigantic bubble on the side and the seam was tearing. Scary huh?
So we get to our meeting and sit down to talk about Free Networking International with AJ Puedan, Dave VanHoose and Dustin Mathews. Many amazing ideas were hashed out at this meeting. Some great content was provided to us. We also talked about the Self Wealth Live expo that will be going on in two weeks here in Tampa. It looks like an amazing event, but unfortunately I have a Tweetup the same day so I can't attend.
So as our second and final meeting came to an end I once again remembered that I have a tire about to pop and the only way to get home is to change it.
In dress pants, hair fixed, makeup on and in heels I pulled out the jack, got the spare and got to work right there in the parking lot of the Westshore Hotel. It was such a humid evening (6pm) and I was drenched in sweat by the time I got it fixed, but the point is that I got it fixed and in heels! Women can do anything men can do and give them an obstacle like heels and they will pull through and get it done.
So 5 amazing new faces and one jacked up tire later I was on my way back home. Once I got home I checked Twitter and Facebook and that's where my day got even better. Someone was giving away a FREE ticket to IZEAFest and a Twitter friend saw it and let them know I was looking to go. I got the ticket (just waiting on the confirmation).
It was a day of ups and downs, awesome new ideas, brainstorming and in the end I received an awesome gift.

I have to thank @retta719 for the free ticket to IZEAFest. It means the world to me! I also want to thank @EdieGalley for looking out and remembering that I was trying to get there. You two are absolutely AMAZING individuals!

Digg, Delicious, Kirtsy, Mixx, Stumbleupon are some of the most used bookmarking sites on the Internet today. Many of you have heard these names and still aren't sure why you should use them and then many of you have no idea what any of those sites are or what any of this means.
In this post I am going to explain the importance of using these sites and many many others.

Social bookmarking allows users to store, organize, search, and manage their content on the Internet by using tags or keywords that are relevant to the web page they are wishing to share. Users can save the content privately as well so they can always come back to the pages that they have stored
Many of these sites allow you to link your Twitter or Facebook accounts to share and spread your content to the people you connect with in your Online life.

Steps For Bookmarking:

Step 1- Create your content
Step 2 - Get an Addthis button to embed on your site or into your blog post
Step 3 - This step will only happen the first time you use these site. You will need to create profiles/accounts on all of the sites to be able to bookmark your content.
Step 4 - Add your content to the sites you choose to.
Step - 5 Don't forget to Tweet it!
That's it! You are now ready to go and bookmark your content the way it was meant to be done.

Far too often here lately I am noticing (with the help of a friend) that so called Social Media experts are multiplying throughout the Internet rather quickly.
Are you one?
If you are I want you to do me a favor....
Answer this one question for me....
How can someone be an expert or a guru at something that is changing day to day, week to week and heck even minute by minute?

I am baffled by the fact that anyone would consider themselves an expert at something evolving and changing so quickly.

I am a Social Media and Online Marketing Strategist and would NEVER consider the word expert in my title. Every day I research new platforms and ways to brand clients on the Internet using the Social Web.

If you are a business that is looking for help with Social Media, beware of anyone claiming to be a guru because the only things they have mastered is Twitter, MySpace, Facebook, YouTube and heck sometimes Flickr.
Always remember when hiring a Social Media Strategist to make sure their marketing plan involves more creativity than just creating a MySpace profile for you and your brand/business.

Too many people Online today think that because they use Twitter and have a Facebook account and a MySpace profile that they are Social Media experts. The sad truth is that they are not.
Knowing HOW to use these sites is the first step to truly finding the full advantage in the world of social media.
Also, there are more sites than just these to create a positive presence on AND always remember that social media campaigns do not show immediate results. YOU as the client/business owner/supposed social media expert need to be committed to your campaign before starting one.

My First Networking Event

So last night my eyes were opened to the world of face to face business networking. Kim Carlisi ( @KimPossible40 on Twitter and Miss Go Getter serving the Tampa area with her amazing concierge services) and I went to the Business Networking Life End of Summer Networking Bash at Ocean Prime in Tampa. The event was business casual and very down to earth friendly. The event was put on by Joe Malinowski founder of Business Networking Life. The cost was $10 with $5 of the $10 going towards Wheels For Success. I would say roughly 70 people made it out and packed one side of the restaurant talking about what it is that we are skilled at and what we do day in and day out. Basically explaining to people what makes us unique, special and what our goals are for our business endeavors.

Being that we were the two Kims I think we made a lasting impression right away. So with a beer in our hands we began talking with people. The first man to approach us was David Doerges, Founder and CEO of Free Networking International. We discussed what it is that we do and then he told us about him. By the end of our conversation things were looking up for me and Kim as well. He is a nice guy with a lot going on in the area. You really need to check out the site HERE (again) and subscribe to the newsletters.

From there many people approached us including; Jeramy Colvin from Send Out Cards. Now this is a business that I wish I had thought of. If you are notorious (like me) for forgetting important days like birthdays, anniversaries etc.. then you NEED to check out this site. Also this is very good in the corporate world to show employees, clients and potential clients that you do care and keeping things on a professional level with a hint of personal mixed in. Who doesn't love getting a card in the mail?
Next on the list is Brian Wallace of WorldVentures. If you think that your workplace morale needs a boost or you need to increase productivity while reducing burnout and turnover rates, this is your man to speak with. Check the site out here.
Also there was Linda Conley, Associate Publisher for the Tampa Bay Woman Newspaper, and she was such a sweet woman (not to mention had the cutest ring). This newspaper can be found all throughout Tampa Bay and its surrounding communities at places like Panera etc... If you get a chance to pick one up and read one, you will not be disappointed.
Lorrie Zelaznik, Business Development Manager at Business Support Partners Inc. , looked like a veteran to these networking events. Working the room, moving in and out of conversations and then right into ours. I was intrigued by her company and what they do. You can see what they are all about here.
Another interesting fellow I met was Sean Thau, Corporate Consultant and Trainer at Partners Prosperity Consulting.
That takes me to the final person we met that night, Mr. Leon J Donovan. Let me tell you, this man knew both Kim and I from Twitter and addressed us as our Twitter names. I definitely found that to be amazing in itself. Now Leon and I talked about all sorts of geeky stuff, social media, Second Life and Twitter of course and that's when I realized that I had a lot in common with him. He is a wine consultant for Time for Wine and right away the ideas began flowing i my head, almost like wine into an empty glass (hehe had to go there). SO I suggest you check Leon out here and that you make it out to the next networking mixer because if I didn't find it to be a waste of my time, neither will you.

Many small businesses just starting out focus only on their geographical location and forget about utilizing sites online to bring awareness to their new endeavors. My name is Kim Randall and I want to do just that. I want to help new businesses understand, take advantage of and profit from the use of Online marketing.
Many companies are doing this, but they don't see results. Most of that is because they aren't engaging properly or they are spamming (basically shoving the information down peoples throats). You want to know the people you are targeting because by forming a bond you are also building trust.

When it comes to Social Media it seems as if the rules change day to day and week to week. What should you say and not say, where should you spend most of your time, what is the best site and blah blah blah....

Here is my list of sites that I am pretty certain any company can benefit from if used properly.

FlickR.com - Yes the photo/image sharing site. Everyone has images, advertisements, snapshots and more. Why not share them on here. Create a following and post away (There is a limit on free photo posting after you reach that limit you can choose to pay a minimal fee OR simply delete older images)

MySpace - Yes you need a MySPace profile and you need to invest some time into building up a following. This is a great way to reach a large number of people all at once. Having a contest? Let your MySPace Peeps know here. (Make sure you keep your MySpace page un-cluttered, too much bling and animated designs will turn people off to checking out your profie and PLEASE do not spam your friends)

Facebook - If you aren't already on board you better get going. Create a personal profile, company profile and even a fan page. (Make sure you keep the app spam to a minimum so you keep your friend and fan base growing)

Twitter - Everyone that has the time to dedicate to "live" Tweeting should totally create an account. If you feel you wont have the time, feel the easiest thing to do is schedule Tweets or would rather spam and not connect, this is NOT the site for you!

YouTube - Do you have a commercial you are running on TV?? If so post it to YouTube too. Have any funny videos....office fun.....etc.... Get it on there, just make sure you link to your website.

LinkedIn - This is your professional profile/online resume and a wonderful place to make new connections. Use it wisely.

See for yourself how hard it is to contact someone. I guess this works better because they can hire 2 or 3 people to read/lose emails instead of actually having to take care of the situation at hand. I personally love the internet and all of the possibilities it has, but lets try to keep the customer service.
Here is a great example of the customer service problem:
Best Buy has had MY computer for a month. I have called them and they have nothing to tell me. My computer is supposedly sitting at Geek Squad City?!? Where is this? I have no clue.
Me: Can you call them and find out what is going on?
Corporate Rep: Sorry, they don't have a call center, but I can send them an email
Me: An email?? Seriously? That's what my local store has been doing.
Corporate Rep: Sorry that's the only way to find out. Should take 1-3 days to get an answer, but for your troubles we'll send you a $30.00 guft card.
Isn't that sweet?! A $30.00 gift card doesn't make up for me being tech challenged for a month. This is my work computer, but what do they really care?
How do you handle customer service in your business? Do you try to smooth out problems with gift cards or do you actually go straight to the source?
Best Buy has officially lost me as a customer when it comes to fixing my computer or referring anyone else to them.
Don't let this be your company. Customer service is still something that we need to be old fashion about. Show customers that you indeed do care!
